The Off-Season Advantage: Building Excitement for Your Next Tourism Season

There's something special about the end of another tourism season in Newfoundland & Labrador. The last guests have checked out, the final tours have wrapped up, and the pace begins to slow. For many operators, it's a chance to catch your breath, reflect on another season, and enjoy a well-deserved break.

And what a season 2026 was! New faces, familiar visitors, unforgettable experiences, and plenty of stories to tell. While the quieter months offer an opportunity to recharge, they also bring something else: an opportunity to keep the inspiration alive. Even when your doors are closed for the season, there are people out there dreaming about their next adventure.

The Inspiration to Travel Happens Year-Round

Think about how people plan their vacations. Sometimes it starts with a recommendation from a friend. Other times, it's a beautiful photograph, an interesting story, or a video that makes someone stop scrolling and think, "I'd love to experience that!" Those moments of inspiration happen throughout the year, often long before anyone starts making reservations.

Someone scrolling through Instagram on a snowy January evening might discover your coastal culinary experience. A couple planning their summer vacation could stumble across your accommodations in November. A family might save a post about an experience they want to enjoy together next summer. These are all opportunities to introduce people to what makes your business special.

And that's the exciting thing about tourism marketing. The journey often begins long before the visitor arrives. Keeping your business visible throughout the year gives you opportunities to become part of those conversations, travel plans, and future adventures.

Your Best Stories Are Worth Sharing Again

One of the greatest things about tourism marketing is the incredible content that comes from the experiences themselves. Think about everything you witnessed this season: the excitement of guests spotting their first whale, the laughter around a table filled with local food, a spectacular sunset, or a visitor discovering something about our province they never expected.

Those are the moments that make tourism special, and chances are you've collected plenty of photos, videos, and stories that haven't made it onto your social media channels yet. The off-season is a wonderful time to revisit them and find new ways to share the experiences that make your business unique.

Share a favourite moment from the summer, tell the story behind an experience, or introduce someone who helps make your business what it is. You might highlight a little detail that visitors would otherwise overlook or revisit a particularly memorable day. There's no expiry date on a great story, and the right one might be exactly what inspires someone's next adventure.

A little marketing idea: Set aside some time to look through your photos and videos from the past season. Choose five moments that capture what makes your experience special, and think about the stories you could tell around them. You might have the beginnings of your next few months of content already waiting for you.

Keep the Connection Going

One of my favourite things about tourism is the connections it creates. Visitors arrive from different places, share experiences, meet new people, and leave with memories that often stay with them for years. For tourism operators, those relationships can continue long after the visit itself, and the quieter months are a lovely opportunity to celebrate the people who were part of your season.

Share a wonderful review, revisit a memorable guest experience, or thank your visitors for another fantastic year. With permission, you can also share the photos and stories your guests have captured along the way. These moments help past visitors reconnect with the experiences they enjoyed while giving future visitors a glimpse of what makes your business so special.

Sometimes, a shared memory is all it takes to inspire a return visit or a recommendation to someone new. It's one of the many reasons that building genuine connections with your audience is such an important part of tourism marketing.

Give Your Audience Something to Look Forward To

The anticipation of a trip can be almost as exciting as the experience itself, which makes the months leading up to your next season a wonderful opportunity to build excitement.

Perhaps you're developing a new experience, planning a special event, refreshing your accommodations, or preparing to welcome guests back to a favourite attraction. Bring people along for the journey! Share a little behind the scenes, introduce your team, or give your audience a glimpse of what you're looking forward to offering next season.

Even the familiar favourites are worth celebrating. A reminder of a much-loved experience, a beautiful location, or a special moment from the previous season can bring back wonderful memories for past visitors and spark curiosity in those who have yet to discover you.

And when next season's dates or bookings become available, you'll already have an audience that's been following along, getting inspired, and looking forward to what's next.

A Little Time to Think Creatively

During the busy season, tourism operators wear a lot of hats. You're welcoming guests, managing bookings, delivering experiences, answering questions, and keeping everything running smoothly. Marketing often happens somewhere in between it all, which makes the off-season a valuable opportunity to step back and look at things with fresh eyes.

Think about what really connected with people this year. Which experiences generated the most excitement? What questions did visitors ask? Which stories received the most engagement? And what new ideas would you love to explore for the season ahead?

Maybe it's time to refresh a few pages on your website, organize your photography, experiment with video, or map out some stories you'd love to share. You might discover opportunities to make the booking process easier, showcase an experience in a new way, or help potential visitors better understand everything you have to offer.

It doesn't have to be a major undertaking. Sometimes a little creative thinking and a few thoughtful improvements can make a meaningful difference.

A little marketing idea: Choose one thing you'd love to improve before your next operating season. It might be your website's booking experience, your social media content, or the way you tell the story of your business. Start there, and build on it.

Find a Rhythm That Works for You

Staying connected with your audience doesn't mean maintaining a peak-season marketing schedule all winter. Tourism is seasonal, and your marketing can reflect that. The quieter months are an opportunity to find a pace that works for your business while keeping your stories and experiences in front of potential visitors.

A couple of meaningful posts each month might be all you need to keep your audience engaged. You could revisit a favourite experience, share a behind-the-scenes update, or offer a little inspiration for next year's travel plans. The goal is to find a rhythm that suits your capacity and supports your business goals.

Quality storytelling, a little consistency, and a genuine connection with your audience can go a long way. And there's absolutely room for a well-deserved break along the way.

Your Next Season Is Already Taking Shape

One of the things I love most about tourism marketing is seeing how a simple story can inspire someone to experience a place for themselves. A photograph sparks curiosity, a story creates a connection, and a shared experience becomes part of someone's travel plans. Eventually, those moments of inspiration can turn into real visitors discovering everything that makes Newfoundland and Labrador so special.

So enjoy the quieter months. Celebrate another season of wonderful experiences, recharge, and take some time to dream about what's next. When you're ready, revisit those photos, share those stories, and give your future visitors something to look forward to.

Because every great tourism season begins with a little inspiration.
